Digipack Ideas

Here we have some images of how we intend to lay out our digipack album cover, we have managed to get hold of these images to relate this to our case as it will help give a concept for which we are aiming to achieve through this.

Band on the road, tours etc as the Raided by Waves band are doing this anyway which gave us the idea of this concept. Perhaps we could have the band on the road to make clear sense of this and as well as recognising who they are as they as new.

The country or woods theme setting is dark and mysterious some conventions that turned up occasionally in the genre of rock in my personal opinion

Think road safety logo

Logo and perhaps name of our band can be placed on the road  above to create a concept to show that they are leaving a mark in order for audiences and people to know as they are new for example.

As you can see on the road above we can stretch the image outwards for the bottom which then goes in at the top, slightly similar to this logo on the left however the position and framing will be different as will will centre it and create a different style to the font to make it our own.

A font style idea we found on Da font called "plane crash" has the same design however it has more of an effect on the way it ripples, when researching into different fonts and logos I came across that Nickelback did something similar with their own

This is a poster for the 2012 movie the amazing spiderman

Focusing only on the image itself:

Power and dominance is displayed as he is portrayed large and high in terms of the shadow.

The character hidden in the darkness, doesn't want to be known, Linkin park did something similar to this on their album cover "minutes to midnight" as the character Peter Parker who is spiderman wants to be save. The band could also have a similar concept as most rock artists are rebellious and therefore need to stay low in order not to get caught

Dark (black and white effect we used in our music video to show flashbacks/memories of the band, relatable...)

Even though these images we are referring to have no physical relation to the genre of rock through bands such as Nirvana and Red Hot Chili Peppers it is important to remember that we are creating a original and fresh concept for our own digipack. These images only help us to explain and create a layout for the concept of our album cover in order to create a more successful and realistic view towards the band we have made

Rock Logos and Symbols

The logo name "Nirvana" is designed using black (for most) capitals for each letter in the word as well as having a semi bold and stylish curve to some of the lettering giving it a formal look and perception to the band which is misleading as many rock overall related bands in my opinion are sharp and bold looking and could lead audiences to think differently of the bands image/genre perhaps however it could be said that it is similar say to the Beatles own logo name as it has the same key features and can be related for being a rock band and does stand out for having the bold, black capital letters. Nirvanas symbol is appeared to be and shown as a badly drawn smiley faced drawing with its tongue lying to the side of its face and having its eyes crossed out appearing to have its mind blown out perhaps to show the effect of what the bands performance or music will have to the audience as well as having a smiley tongued face to show the enjoyment and keeping to portraying the blown out of the mind theory in a positive way. Another idea to this cartoony drawing of a smiley face who is sticking his tough out and has X'd eyes could show their rebellious and bad side as it is rude. It is drawn out to be bad on purpose again to show the rebellious side of the band in the I don’t care attitude, messy/sloppy portrayal of the hardcore, rock band image to contribute and help the appearance of the Nirvana name design to show and define to audiences that they are a rock genre band.

Here we have Red hot chilli peppers combination of a logo and its name, the band uses capital and bold letters in order to stand out and catch the audiences attention. They refer their name with the colour  of the red symbol relating to the words of "Red Hot Chili Peppers" showing their identity and image in order to keep themselves original from other rock bands. The symbol in my opinion is a concept for meaning and being a star, as they are considered to be famous or  perhaps stand out compared to other rock genre bands, this could be suggested as they have a large number of views for their music videos for example on video sharing sites such as youtube. It could be the fact that they are the center of attention for example the star being them in the middle and the words gathering and revolving around it could imply their audiences as they are unique for performing and making music.

Nickelback also use capital and bold letters to stand out with their logo name, representing that the colour's of the words are fading around the edges implying and making reference to the "I don't care attitude" of the band which is also portrayed in some of their videos such as "How you remind me" as most of the settings and backgrounds of the storyline are decaying, old like this for example.
The also use a black and white style to amplify this image that they are going for, supporting my theory into the use of it.

One of Foo fighters logos and name uses capital, bold letters and widening it out for the purpose of keeping original as many bands like above for example have similar styles. The logo is kind of in your face towards the audience as the 3D effect of it stretches out to  help to look like it is pushed out
Looks like a tower overlooking ahead as it is made to look like that it has come from the round symbol below portraying a dominant and powerful impression to show they are perhaps the best and better than anybody else. An image of what seems to be a missile symbol is displayed perhaps suggesting that they have a big impact to their audiences and spread across a large audience base, as it is giving me the impression to my opinion.

Lastly I have picked out Linkin park's logo name which can displays the use of capital and bold letters to attract and stand out to make it look sleek. The only use of colour is black showing and suggesting power in this case as the text is on top of one another to suggest this as it shows itself to be tall and dominate over others. To also suggest this is the Sharp ends of the text giving the illusion that the band is fierce, a convention of rock for being rebellious. Everything also fits into place as the the third "N" on the top slots into the "A" and "R" below making it look appealing to audiences and supporting my theory that I was previously stated.

In conclusion from over viewing some of the specific features of these rock genre logos I have found that their are some things that we must use when making in are own, every single one of these logos have for example all worded capital letters this is something we should use to define the band and ourselves of a rock genre. Another is using colours such as black. It is important to also relate the font style to the music video, digipack and concept we will therefore plan to create a lay out idea for our digipack overall mostly the album cover.

Magazine Articles, Rock Related

Here I have some existing magazine articles from the bands we are looking into in order to relate to the genre of rock:

Is similar and can be related to the album as it has the theme of the galaxy and planets as well as the font of "Red Hot Chilli Peppers" and its symbol are built up of stars to relate with surroundings.

The album is at the bottom, people know what they have to buy

Reviews/Quotes, getting opinions and advertsing through word of mouth as it is reliable especially hearing from well known established company reviewers for example.

"THE NO.1 ALBUM" subheading, capital letters, displayed in a bigger font and different colour "Yellow" Trying to stand out and sell itself to the audience to show its a good album.

It also includes the contents "Available on 2 X CD", "New Tracks" trying to persuade the audience to buy it with all the extra features, worth the money?
Same style of their logo and pictures of the members of the band, telling audiences its them

"The new Album" and "In stores now" big, capital letters, stand out

Rusty them, run down, getting old ties in with their logo and some of their music videos such as "How I remind you"

Has the stores below where the album is available from audiences know where they can buy it.

More than one version or copy having a standard CD and a limited edition digipack including more as well as aiming for their active/hard care fans and audiences.

Having new and exclusive content, selling itself, trying to persuade the audience to buy it with all the extra features, worth the money?

Link to their website, audiences can check out their other products
Green day logo big, stands out on the magazine

Image of Billy Joe Armstrong the lead singer and guitarist of the band, main character, most recognizable to audiences who may not be fully aware of the band but do listen to them perhaps.

At the bottom the page is divided by a line, this is done as green day are trying to sell two products "The new single" and "The album"

Image of the cover of their singles and album, audiences know what they have to buy.

"THE NO.1 SELLING ALBUM" Trying to stand out and sell itself to the audience to show its a good album.

List of some of their hits in the album such as American idiot and Wake me up when September ends  which is also the one of the heading under their logo name, trying to relate to audiences the tracks they may know as they are the most popular perhaps, trying to sell themselves

Exclusive content: free DVD including the making of and other videos, incentive to get the album as well as selling themselves.

Colours also match from the album by having both red and white text and using a black background at the bottom section.

Links to their connected websites, audiences can check out their other products.

In conlusion we will take similar elements of this as well as addressing and putting in our own content such as the stores we will market our product for example through HMV, ITunes, Amazon as well as our album cover picture, band members, headings and logos and many more. We will also take into consideration the layout of where we display the content we intend include as everything needs to fit into place through organising it into sections so that the reader can pick up the information contained.

Digi-pack Album Covers Analysis

Here I have been researching in the different types of digipacks related around the genre of rock and the bands we have been also researching into. This will help us plan and organize our own album covers overall for the band and music video we produced.

Front Covers:

This is the first album that the rock band group Nirvana released which was back in late 1988

Plain design and contains very little to justify the band of what they are or do in terms of the genre, don't know what to expect from them

Even though it is limited I have managed to come up with some theory's or meanings towards the fact that the band are trying make

Black background, mystery, who are they? (there new to scene create tension and curiosity towards audiences as at the time they were new to the scene)

The use of colours on this album cover both the black of the background  and the grey for the font gives the impression to audiences of a dark theme perhaps of the music or attitudes of the band members.

This is Green Day's American idiot album cover released mid 2004

This contains more will the illustrated image to make the cover more interesting and attractive to get the audiences attention.

Black/plain background makes you focus on the graphic artwork as well as keeping to the same style as Nirvana's album cover above.

Red font colour used for the American idiot logo resembles blood

Grenade is in the shape of a heart, when the pin is pulled out the heart will explode also relating to the American idiot title as it is an odd concept to do.

Text of the name of the band and album is pushed to the side in order to show the image, it also fits in nicely by it being stacked that way.

The most recent rock band album to be released is Linkin Parks Minutes To Midnight that came out in the early time of year May 2007

Black and white theme, retro can be related to our music video itself as we used the same effect to show some of the bands flashbacks

Outlines of artists can only be seen in black, staying hidden, rebellious attitude as they may have displayed something bad perhaps

White background is deemed to be pure challenging the conventions of the rock genre as well as being original as green day and nirvana are similar in the type of background etc...

Logo name is displayed at the top to show the image and also dominating something I mentioned before with it (post here)

Back Covers and Spines:

This is the back cover of Green day's American idiot.

Plain black has similar relations with the front cover in order to match together as they are all connected

Parental advisory and explicit content, it is clearly noted that the audience should read it  to see that they are relatable to the rock genre for being rebellious.

Name of the band and album displayed on the spine of the album, this is used as the CD's may be stacked on their side therefore the audience can see the name in order to find what they are looking for.

Foo fighters, The colour and the shape back album cover.

The lyrics of the song are lined up against the line of circles this fits in nicely and is layout probably in order to leave necessary space.

Plain dark blue background, suggesting that they are not to rebellious for example.

Colours are accorded by blue, white and red. This is styled by background being blue, red being shapes and numbers and text being white. This is therefore organised.

This is the back album cover of Red hot chilli pepper's I'm with you.

White background, plain not to much to say about them but also displays the fact of being pure.

Name of the song and band, words are going down the spine instead of along, audiences might stack their CD's along each other therefore they are to see and read it clearly.

Keeping to the black and white theme supporting my theory as well as sense of retro with the sharp typed out text.

It is important to understand different album covers overall in order to get a concept the artist or band are trying to imply to the audience. As well as knowing how it should be laid and positioned out in order to fit in elements of the content in with each other to make it appearing attractive to the audience member. We will also need to apply elements that all of them have such as copyright issues, studios involved etc in order to define ourselves as original. We have learnt and will incorporate ideas from this to narrow down the alternative designs of our digipack we have already so that we can relate to our research of why we did specific features overall.

Group Name Suggestions and Ideas

For our group name we wanted our audiences to be able to relate to our name in terms of having a meaning towards it and referable to the alternative rock genre. We came up with a range of different names that could be used as well as making some examples to help us get an idea for brainstorming. We therefore combined these words together with the word "Studios" as we got permission to film at one of the MTV sets and with this appear to be a professional music company.

Road Drummer Studios

Doorstep Studios

Lockbox Studios

Frostbite Studios

Metaphor Studios

Flashlight Studios

Black Tie Studios

Black Belt Studios

Amplified Studios

Chosen Group Name

For our group name we wanted our audiences to be able to relate to our name in terms of it having a meaning towards it and referable to the alternative rock genre. We came up with a range of different names that could be used as well as making some examples to help us get an idea for brainstorming. We firstly however looked up some words as well as using our own knowledge used words that could or were related around the alternative rock genre, including words such as drummer, road, frostbite, studios etc that stood out and could be considered cool perhaps.

From this we came to the conclusion of "Lithium Studios", lithium is a mood stabilizing drug used to treat people suffering depression which could be relatable and with meaning as this is the effect we wish to have on people that watch and listen to our music. The studios part was devised by the fact that we were filming at MTV studios for our music video project as well as sounding professional as it seems big and power for example.

We will now have to use this name to design a logo, we already have ideas as to either have the "Lithium" part put in a tablet as it is a drug and we want our music to be portrayed as an addiction to show how addictive and wanting it is. Also when researching the definitions of the word "Lithium" we came across the fact that it is also an element on the periodic table therefore we could design a picture of the symbol and combine it again with the standard "Studio" word.

Costumes and Appearance

Taking on board our research and planning posts from our conventions and artist image of the rock genre overall we have taken consideration into what appearance, costumes and props the artists/actors should be wearing when performing for the music video.

For James we suggested to him to use a hair gel to spike and hold up his short showing a kind of messy look and image a whole part of the "I don't care attitude" to show a rebellious side of the lead singer and guitarist.

We advised him to wear a graphic tee shirt of with colours of black and white as many images and concepts of rock overall related to this, as well as suggesting the idea of power as James is the lead singer of the band. Black super skinny jeans were also necessary for the role as James being quite tall compared than the others we took advantage of to amplify the image of power and dominance, making him wear this will give the impression of his tall height.

He is also seen wearing some leather converse shoes with a zipper attached along the side of the lace holes not only is it stylish and keeps to the image of rebellious but also is very fashionable and relatable as converse are a well known show company audiences will know of this and be encouraged to base their appearance of him.

With Charlie we asked him to keep the beard and long hair as when we saw him as when we put together our researching and planning towards an artists image we discovered that many rockers had the same and similar look as him. This is also upholding the "I don't care attitude" showing that they are being themselves and that is the sought of image we wish to show him as when it comes to his part and performance.

With Charlie wearing a plain black top we could create a sense of mystery in who this character might be to the eyes of the audience as well as being a new band we could therefore create tension to this. We also came to the conclusion from our research that many artists wore many types of jeans we therefore thought it suitable to suggest him to wear a pair of dark wash jeans.

He is also wearing a bracelet on his right arm showing that the band have a sense of style to the modern world and keeping within the trend of there suggested target audience.

Lastly for Navid we decided to mix up some of the elements of both James and Charlie's styles as well as creating a whole new original concept for the image. We had a combination of both Charlie's beard and James's hair  to amplify the image of his rebellious side and the theories of rock I have just explained about them each.

He is wearing both a black tee shirt with a V neck cut out around his neck suggesting a sex appeal as he is showing flesh we suggested this as most of audiences we came across in finding demographic readings on youtube where in fact female. Not to mention he is also wearing both black trousers and shoes which gives the impression of a mystery towards the artist as you do not know what to expect from him

We also challenged the convention of the genre rock by asking him to wear a scarf which in turn helps to create both mystery and fashion again, making our artists image original in the fact that they stand out meaning audiences will recognise and define them.

In conclusion this will make our music video more realistic, referable and more relatable to the genre of rock so that audiences know where they are from, we also did create some original ideas and concepts to make the band stand out from others in order for audiences to know them.
