Genres Overall

"Genre is not simply given by culture, rather it is in a constant process of negotiation and change"

Quote by David Buckingham

Genre is a term to categorize a specific piece of work that may or is different within that section, for example in the media and music industry that I wish to know it for it is used to define an artist and song by the way they both portray themselves to be. If we put this theory into action by using the genre of rock we can see that most artists how the portrayal of having long hair and a bearded face to show the "I don't care attitude" and "sticking it to the man", rebelling and doing what they want. Which also go with some of the points they make in the lyrics of the song, these two factors are therefore relatable and help portray the stereotypical view that audiences have and believes that I have also made.

Here are some genres that I have managed to come up with:

Rock
Pop
Classical
Hip Hop
Rap
Dubstep
Indie
Trash Metal
Punk
Diva
Riot Girl
Accustic
Country
Raggae
Dance
Hardcore
Electro
Synth
Easy Listening
Emo
Garage
Grime
Grunge
Soul
Alternative
Boy Band

and many more...

As I was saying about the stereotypical views and portrayals we have towards these different genres there are elements that I believe make up this image of the genre through its song and artists. It is important to define the different categories of genres as each genre has different elements and characteristics that make up the image of both the artists and songs, when we come up into choosing and making the music video and artists we need to research into these elements/characteristics and plan towards doing so. I have made two spider diagrams to show the impressions that we and the audience think are in these two different genres below:
