Andrew Goodwin's Theory and Applying It

Andrew Goodwin developed a 5 key aspect theory that make up videos that we and the audience should consider in order to identify them, I will apply this theory to any music video. Below are the stages I will be covering and going over:

Thoughts beats - seeing the sound
Narrative and performance - visuals
Artists image - portrayal
Relation of visuals to the song - meaning
Technical aspects of a music video - effects

Thoughts Beats

Step 1 - Analyse the structure of the song e.g chorus/verses.

Step 2 - Listen and look at the way the artist uses his voice in parts of the song, it is a trademark and identification of the artist.

Step 3 - Lastly how does the artist address the song as it be seen as story or journey, giving a image of what is happening.

Narrative and Performance

Audiences that tend to watch a music video get a brief overview of the storyline or the situation which we then try to make or explain what is fully being done here through our own ideas. The artists act as a narrator, telling the story of song through the use of the lyrics or being a part of it for example being the lover falling for someone. This is there so that audiences don't lose interest of the song as they are following the storyline and trying to make understand of what is happening.

Artist image

An artists image can also play a part to define a music video as they are telling a story through the use of singing the lyrics or being the character in the situation for example loving someone that is also displayed in the video. Therefore from this it shows the development of the star over time showing the type of person they are. It is also important to see how they portray themselves in terms of the relation of genre they are in for example in a rock related band they need to hard, rebellious etc as well as their appearance including facial expressions (angry etc) , body features ( messed up, spiky hair or having a beard etc) clothes (worn out jeans, graphic tee shirts etc) all of these features help the artist stand out and define themselves to music audiences.

Relation to visuals

There are three different ways a music video can show itself to be through the use of visuals, audio and the way they connect or relate to each other.

Illustrated music videos use a set of images to describe and show the meaning of lyrics and genre, creating a concept or storyline for audiences to watch and relate to making it more interesting and effective.

Amplified music videos constantly show the meaning and effects through the video which is then drummed into our vision.

Disjunctive music videos ignores the meaning of the song in relation with the visuals, this meaning no storyline in which the audience can follow.

Technical Aspects

What they hold and add to the music video through the use of:

Camera - movement, speed, cutting etc

Editing - fades, effects etc

Lighting - set moods and display key moments for the song (for dramatic effect)

Mise en scene - relation to the song and storyline

In conclusion this will help us to understand how we can create our own version of a music video to apply it to the rock genre, band and music we are doing.
